Chapter Seventeen
Soon I was on a train to Florida. Mom was visiting Leslie and Patty and would arrive a couple days later. Uncle Dick met me at the station, and soon I was settled alone in Mom’s house. That night there was a huge rainstorm, the electricity went out, along with very strong winds. Being on an island, the water was filling the yard around me as I sat on the couch with my flashlight and radio. But by morning the rain had stopped and the water had stopped at the door. I was relieved and went for a walk on the branch littered beach. I wondered how Mom would be and just wanted to hug and protect her as she had me all these years. Ethan had decided not to come this time, and I missed him, but it was all right as I wanted to spend as much time alone with Mom as possible. When they arrived the next day, Mom looked like she has been through some heavy storms of her own. Thin and walking slower, she greeted me with the same love that I had always counted on. So we spent many days together doing our usual things like going to the beach and walking, but at a much slower pace. I did much of the cooking when Leslie and Patty were out for the evening. Mom said I was being a wonderful nurse. I liked expressing this care. It was like an invisible, silent bond was forming like the original one that had connected us at my birth. On the day I had to return home, Leslie was going to drive me to the train. As I turned to hug her and say goodbye, Mom hugged me especially tight, then let go. I knew inside that I would probably not see her again, and tears were in my eyes as I forced myself to walk away. It was like all the times she had taken me to airports over the years, loving me but letting me go.
Once home we talked often, and she seemed to be doing better. Robin and I took our usual walks along the river. My friend Diane moved to Seattle to train to be a Christian Science nurse after her divorce. I was working less with Lync and wondering what I would do next. I had a couple other families that I worked with, but I felt the currents of life, like the ones in the Eel River, would soon move me swiftly onward. I did not have a plan, but felt a sense of God’s presence that supported me even in times of change.
It came more abruptly than I could have ever imagined, when after a brief telephone call with Ethan, I realized he wasn’t coming anymore. I called him after we had just spent a weekend together, as he had not called me like he usually did. I wanted to know if he was coming for Christmas or New Year’s.
